Supporting East West Rail

Our trusted transportation of essential rail materials for the new East West Rail line.

We’re excited to hit the ground running with our upcoming East West Rail project. The initiative intends to create a new direct connection between Oxford and Cambridge, serving communities across the area through faster journey times, lower transport costs, and subsequently easing the pressure on local roads. The new East West Rail line will be delivered in three stages:

  • Connection Stage One: Oxford to Bletchley and Milton Keynes
  • Connection Stage Two: Oxford to Bedford
  • Connection Stage Three: Oxford to Cambridge

Network Rail was responsible for Stage One of East West Rail and is also a partner in the EWR Alliance, along with Atkins, Laing O’Rourke and VolkerRail – who are delivering phase two of Connection Stage 1, linking Bicester to Bletchley. The East West Railway Company (EWR Co) and Network Rail are acting as the Department for Transport’s joint sponsors.

As part of this project, our expertise has enabled us to:

  • Deliver over 83,400 tonnes of ballast to the site
  • Remove and recycle over 29,100 tonnes of material from the site
  • Deliver 250 rail strings – equating to 32,400 tonnes of steel
  • Bring in over 33,700 sleepers to the site

So far the project has installed:

  • 35,671m (as of 02/02) 22.16 miles of track installed
