Colnbrook Retiming

Collaborative solutions for quicker wagon turnarounds.

Colnbrook is a major terminal for aggregate industries, regularly receiving around 8kt of material from Merehead quarry each week. The terminal is served three times per week by a “jumbo” service of 36 wagons per train. Consequently the timely return of these wagons to the loading point for efficient cycling of wagons is critical for Freightliner’s customer Mendip Rail.

By working collaboratively with AI staff at the quarry and terminal, MRL planning teams and Network Rail planning staff, Freightliner were able to identify more efficient pathing options on the network allowing several hours to be cut from a cycle meaning wagons can be returned to the quarry more quickly and reloaded ready for despatch to the next customer.
