Freightliner wins two awards at the IPL annual conference 16.05.2012

IPL (International Produce Limited), part of the world’s largest retailer Walmart, has named Freightliner ‘Intermodal Operator of the Year’ and ‘Most Sustainable Logistics Provider’.

IPL, who provide fresh fruit, vegetables, dairy, dried goods, wine and flowers for the supermarket chain Asda, has awarded Freightliner their coveted ‘Intermodal Operator of Year’ award as well as naming them ‘Most Sustainable Logistics Provider’ at their annual conference.

Freightliner was awarded ‘Intermodal Operator of the Year’ in recognition of their dedication to customer service, quality and innovation. Freightliner transport temperature-controlled perishable commodities via its daily rail network and also provides the service for the final road journey to IPL’s distribution centre.

Freightliner was also awarded ‘Most Sustainable Logistics Provider’ as they demonstrated an efficient, environmentally friendly alternative to road transport, which complements IPL’s commitment to sustainability by reducing its carbon footprint.

Nigel Lynch, Business Development Manager for Logico, a division of Freightliner Ltd, said: “Freightliner are committed to providing our customers with a quality, flexible service which can be adapted to meet their needs. These awards are a reflection of those principles and are especially satisfying considering our relationship with IPL only commenced in 2011. We look forward to a long and mutually beneficial relationship and thank IPL for their kind recognition.”

Freightliner, has made a significant investment in new container wagons

Freightliner has placed an order with VTG, for a fleet of twin platform Ecofret ‘Shortliner’ wagons to meet the evolving deep sea container market towards 40ft containers.  The 40ft deck length, tein set  wagons and are designed to maximise the amount of 40ft containers that can be hauled on one service without empty running or 20ft wasted space.  Ecofret ‘Shortliner’ wagons are enabling Freightliner to maximise port and inland capacity, reduce CO2 emissions and increase network utilisation by maximising the amount of boxes that can be hauled on one service.

Freightliner through the use of these new wagons and the operator’s unique ability to haul longer, heavier trains, using the state of the art PowerHaul locomotives, are creating Shortliner services. Through Shortliner services, Freightliner is increasing the amount of 40ft containers hauled per train by over 42% in comparison to a standard Class 66 service hauling 24 wagons, whilst still fulfilling the 20ft market demand.
Adam Cunliffe Managing Director, Freightliner Limited commented: “Freightliner Ltd’s investment in the new Ecofret ‘Shortliner’ wagons demonstrates Freightliner’s dedication to meet our customers’ needs in a market which is increasingly dominated by 40ft containers. These new wagons complement our existing 60ft wagon fleet ensuring maximum utilisation of both 40ft and 20ft containers. Our capability to haul longer, heavier trains teamed with our new wagons is ensuring more containers can be moved by rail, reducing CO2 emissions and removing more lorries from the UK’s congested roads.”

Freightliner welcomes the launch today of the Command Paper: Reforming our Railways: Putting the Customer First 08.03.2012

The Command Paper reiterates the value of a transport system as an engine for economic growth and the valuable wider benefits that rail freight delivers.  Peter Maybury, CEO, Freightliner Group Limited said; "We are pleased that the Government recognises that rail freight is a key enabler in supporting UK business and can contribute to economic growth whilst at the same time relieving road congestion and reducing carbon.

The investments in the Strategic Freight Network to date have made a real impact on our business enabling hundreds of containers per day to move by rail instead of on the UK's congested road network and we welcome the plans to continue delivery of the Strategic Freight Network, particularly initiatives to increase capacity on the rail network."

He went on to say "As a member of the Rail Delivery Group I recognise the challenge of reducing the costs of the UK Railway system and I know that Network Rail and all the operators, including Freightliner, are keen to play their part and drive through efficiencies. The announcements made today will help to free up some of the constraints that were proving challenging in driving cost reductions and will provide continued impetus. As an independent company that operates and competes wholly in the broader transportation and logistics market we have to continually drive efficiencies through our business and hope we can play our part in contributing to reducing the unit costs of the whole railway system.”

Freightliner Ltd and MSC (UK) Ltd have negotiated a contract renewal increasing railed container volumes to the North West.

MSC one of the world’s leading container shipping companies has renewed their contract with Freightliner Ltd, the UK’s leading intermodal rail freight operator increasing railed container volumes to the North West.

The renewed contract is an expansion of the existing Freightliner/ MSC service, moving 30,000 container moves per annum. The increase in volumes will remove over 6,000 additional lorry journeys per year from the UK’s congested road network.

This announcement follows the transfer of MSC’s services at The Port of Felixstowe to the ports newly developed, state of the art berths 8 and 9.

Adam Cunliffe, Managing Director, Freightliner Limited said; “We are delighted to have renewed our North West service with MSC and look forward to further developing this key rail route from the Port of Felixstowe with MSC. The contract helps to support the additional capacity that MSC is providing through the new berth 8 and 9 at Felixstowe that are able to support the new generation 14,000 teu container ships. In addition, it is intended that the service will be hauled by Freightliner’s new PowerHaul locomotives which uniquely combines, longer trains enabling increases in container volumes with reduced CO2 emissions. ”

Kelvin Wilden, Operations Director, MSC (UK) Ltd commented; “MSC (UK) Ltd is delighted to have renewed its North West contract with Freightliner that has proven to be so successful over the last five years. We have a long standing relationship with Freightliner supporting a number of services on a daily basis. Reliability and flexibility are a prerequisite of all our rail service providers and need to be proven before awarding any new contract. MSC is committed to supporting its rail product demonstrated by running some of the best utilised intermodal trains in and out of the Port of Felixstowe. Freightliner as an existing service provider remains well placed to help us maintain this commitment now and into the future.”
